Three lines from Elvis Costello’s new album with The Roots, Wise Up Ghost. I don’t know how good they are, but I’m glad he wrote them.
“I’ve got this imaginary radio and I’m punching up the dial…” – Wake Me Up
“Lost girl found on the radio…” – Wise Up Ghost
“Maintaining radio silence from now on…” – Can You Hear Me?
Obviously, the lines are out of context, and – as noted – I’m not sure how good they are in absolute terms. For years now, I’ve bought Costello’s albums but not listened to them much, because they usually sound at first like something important is being said – but they don’t stick. Still, even if “radio” is to Elvis as “road” is to Springsteen, even if invoking the radio is three parts ritual to one part meaning these days, I’m there.
