his master’s voice

Charlie Rose has an interview with Bashar Assad this morning. I’ll leave it to the people who are qualified to parse what the interview means; I just want to note what the interview sounds like.

First, and I don’t know why this surprises me, Assad’s voice isn’t big or threatening. The word “diffident” comes to mind. Second, and all respect to Charlie Rose for getting the interview, Assad is hard to understand. I’ll be curious to see whether his answers are subtitled by this evening’s network news.
