I’m a decade or so late, but here’s a question: what is it about the band Radiohead that people love?
Two things immediately come to mind: addictive, off-kilter melodies, and the fact that the whole enterprise retains enough mystery that we can project our own feelings onto the band’s music. (I mean this in the simplest way possible – you sing along to Radiohead like you sing along to ‘Louie, Louie,’ making up words as you go along.)
Of course there’s less here than meets the eye, in the same way that after being incredibly cool in the 80s, R.E.M. coasted to a halt once you could understand Michael Stipe’s lyrics. At any rate, people love Radiohead.
