I didn’t know this quote was famous, and I’m not sure I agree with it 100 percent, but it’s close enough, and better than the cul de sac of the alternatives.
Science is the only news. When you scan through a newspaper or magazine, all the human interest stuff is the same old he-said-she-said, the politics and economics the same sorry cyclic dramas, the fashions a pathetic illusion of newness, and even the technology is predictable if you know the science. Human nature doesn’t change much; science does, and the change accrues, altering the world irreversibly.
I’ll argue that there is still news in humanness and the working out of our mutual problems and aspirations, but he’s right to lose patience with ‘the same sorry cyclic dramas.’ How many times do we have to live through the corrupted news cycle we’re trapped in before we find a way out?
(Glenn Beck note: confronted with the above quote, WWGD? He’d mention eugenics and drag in the Nazis. That should be the new game – how many cites/references does it take Glenn to get from whatever he doesn’t like to an established terrorist/communist/Nazi?)
