so far away (listening, day 6 – part 3)

The second disc of the Velvet Underground’s Live At Max’s Kansas City has a young man talking about President Nixon and Cambodia, as the band plays on.

(The album was the result of someone bringing a cassette recorder to the club. It caught a lot of ambient noise.)

The band has a “wouldn’t it have been nice to have a hit” sound. It was the last night with Lou Reed, really, the last night of the Velvets. Retrospectively, you know you’re hearing the world turn.
